Failed Cuteness

I picked up this book a couple of years ago at a nearby used book store. It must have been a cutting-edge novelty book for 1941, with the die-cut hole in all the pages to reveal the plastic eye with the jiggling pupil. But it seems that the idea was not coordinated that well with the art, and as a result the characters all look slightly demented.

Oh dear! To me it looks like that yellow bow has been tied too tightly, causing Kitty to be strangled!

Haha! Some of those illustrative styles from the 40s-early 50s were fairly disconcerting. Perhaps more so because it was so unintentional. :-)
