Jon, what was this painted in? There seems to be so much lovely texture showing.
It's egg tempera, something I have been playing around with for the past year or so in spare moments. It is something new for me, since all of my illustration work has been done in transparent media or in pen.
Egg tempera! I have never tried that, but it looks tempting. I'll add that as a 'medium tag' for the blog, as I hope to see more images using it.
I love the Van Gogh sky. I just started playing around with egg temperas. Is there a brand you like---please don't tell me you make your own!
I use Sennellier tube medium and titanium white mixed with tube watercolors. That way I don't have to maintain a whole separate set of colors. For panels I use Ampersand Claybord. I have found that you have to cover this with about three coats of underpainting before getting down to work or the paint sometimes tends to lift off when you go over it with a wet brush.
