Pittsburgh Recast

Here is my entry for the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators 10th Anniversary Show on display through September 7 at the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh, PA, concurrent with the city's 250th anniversary. I learned from Mrs. T's Pierogies that Pittsburgh is their #1 consumer in the nation. They're a hot item at local church sales, and the Pirates baseball team features 3 live pierogi characters at their events. Entries in PSI's juried show highlight various aspects of Pittsburgh's past, present and future so I intended the iconic figure to appeal to baby boomers fondly recalling their own ancestors in the role of pierogi maker. Behind her is a gray view of the thriving steel mills of times past. I made a coloring sheet where kids can add their own favorite fillings. Make mine potato cheese!

That lady looks like my old cookery teacher!
To my shame, I had to look up 'pierogi' to find out what it was as I have never heard it before!

Lovely piece of work Anni, I hope it does well in the show.
